Carpinus betulus, or as it is more commonly known, 'Hornbeam' is a fantastic tree that will provide you with interest all year long.
Very similar to a Beech, the common hornbeam is a reliable and tough specimen that retains many of its leaves through winter, although it does tend lose a few more leaves than Beech.
Hornbeams have gorgeous, glossy green leaves during spring that give way to coppery leaves in winter, retaining its leaves all year round. You can also plant your hornbeam to create a border to your garden, as hedges are also great for the environment and wildlife, providing shelter and food supplies for many animals.
